Simplicity before understanding is simplistic; simplicity after understanding is simple.

Edward De Bono

UI Designer, Information Architect

Susan is the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Specialist at hexaZen. As a result, she takes care of all the user interface design, information architecture, and user testing. She also manages all the business handlings for hexaZen and is the one responsible for project management on all projects.

Susan received her B.Sc. from the University of Victoria with a combined major in Physics and Astronomy and a minor in Computer Science. As an undergraduate, she took part in coop and acquired experience in research areas of Astronomy and programmed scripts for Meteorologists and Hydrologists. Her physics coop work placements included the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO), Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Co. (CFHT) and Environment Canada.

After getting married, living in France, traveling, trying her hands on web design and development, and then settling in Vancouver, she decided to go back to school. In 2007, Susan received her M.Sc. in Computer Science in the area of Human-Computer Interaction from Simon Fraser University, under the supervision of Dr. Ted Kirkpatrick. The lack of experts in HCI and the interdisciplinary nature of the field appealed to her. During her graduate career, she acquired knowledge and experience in areas of ubiquitous computing, interaction techniques, social navigation, mixed-initiative interaction, and usability. She also worked as a Teaching Assistant and Tutor Marker for various undergrad courses in Computer Science.

Upon graduation in 2007, she became a full time Information Architect for a Drupal design and development company and also started to work part time as a HCI and UI Design Consultant for a startup, which builds math software. Now, hexaZen has entered the iPhone application business and Susan is very excited to contribute her skills towards building user-centered designs and cool applications for the iPhone. It is the perfect platform for experts in her field.
